Since my childhood in Sri Lanka I had dreamed of becoming a medical doctor, a dream that may have been encouraged by my parents. In my senior and higher school certificate examinations I was able to fulfil the requirements for entry into medical school, and finally ended up in the medical school of the University of Ruhuna, from where I obtained my MBBS. After graduation, I worked as an intern medical officer in a teaching hospital in the beautiful southern coastal city of Galle in Sri Lanka. After the internship my first appointment was to the Outpatients Department of the General Hospital in Kalutara, another coastal city in the Western Province. Following five years of work at the Outpatients Department, I decided to join the National Institute of Health Sciences (NIHS), Kalutara. This was a turning point in my medical career. The NIHS in Kalutara is the premier training institute under the Ministry of Health, Sri Lanka. The origin of the Institute dates back to 1 July 1926, when the first Health Unit in the whole of South East Asia was established in Kalutara. In 1966 the Health Unit was upgraded to the Institute of Hygiene. Later, in 1979, it developed as the NIHS. In the 1980s the Institute's scope of activities was broadened, and now NIHS is catering for the training needs of the country's Public Health and Curative Care sectors. Through the Institute's involvement in training activities it has become one of the region's pioneer institutes in the field of public health. I became a proud member of NIHS, and the environment within the Institute encouraged me to study for my Masters in Public Health, which then empowered me to become a teacher in public health at the NIHS.
